Usually when you hear “man overboard” it doesn’t turn out in a positive ending, but yesterday this was not the case. A room steward from the Carnival Glory spotted what he believed to be a man overboard Sunday afternoon, as the ship was on their way to Cozumel and notified the bridge officers who then reduced speed and started rescue operations.
As they got closer they found a man approximately 21 miles north of Cuba. The Carnival Glory team deployed a lifeboat and were able to rescue this 33 year old man who turned out to be the crew member from the Norwegian Getaway that had fallen overboard on Saturday afternoon.
On Saturday at about 3:20pm the Coast Guard command center was notified by NCL Getaway cruise ship of this crew member falling overboard and immediately diverted to conduct a search about 28 miles Northwest of Pinar del Rio, Cuba. The NCL Getaway reversed course and continued to search as well until late hours in the evening when the search was then called off.
This story ends in a positive way Thanks to the Carnival Glory. The man was brought aboard the Carnival Glory where he was treated by the medical staff onboard. It is still unclear how the man fell overboard.
Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Lines stated “This is nothing short of miraculous, Kudos to the Carnival Glory team for this amazing effort to rescue a fellow seafarer”.
