This has happened on my recent American flights as well. Customs and Border Patrol has been bumping passengers with illegal aliens. On the last flight 8 paying customers were bumped but it cost American $800.00 each.
I had a hard boarding pass and my AA app automatically placed me on a much later flight connection. I used the hard copy and got the red flashing light and buzzer at boarding time.
I told the gate agent if I’m being bumped I wanted the maximum compensation. Ask for a red coat agent. They are authorized to compensate higher than a gate agent. I’ve deleted the AA app since then.
